Committee votes to advance fire station design with hybrid heating system

CARLISLE — Fire Station Building Renovation Committee approves hybrid heating approach. The committee unanimously voted for a hybrid HVAC system combining an electric heat pump with gas boiler backup for the apparatus bay, plus a required 40-kilowatt solar installation. Fire Chief Bryan Sorrows cited operational criticality—preventing diesel gelling and equipment freezing during extreme cold emergencies—as essential to response readiness.
The design team estimates the solar installation cost will be offset by generator downsizing savings with no net budget impact. Committee members emphasized early community outreach to abutters regarding exterior aesthetics before Town Meeting. Design Development estimates were expected within days.
