CCHS students credited with saving man's life on the ice
The Concord-Carlisle Regional School Committee recognized four CCHS students and alumni this week for their roles in saving a man's life during a beginner adult hockey session at Valley Sports last summer.
CARLISLE --
COMMUNITY -- At the Oct. 7 Concord-Carlisle Regional School Committee meeting, CCHS staff member Ryan Palmer told committee members about an incident last summer in which his friend, a 69-year-old beginner skater playing in an adult hockey session at Valley Sports, collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. Palmer said he began CPR, which he had learned through training at CCHS, and called for help. Current CCHS senior Declan Daly and his brother Cam Daly, a 2023 graduate now serving as a U.S. Marine, along with students Will and Brendan, responded within seconds. Cam Daly led CPR efforts, Declan helped keep the man's airway open, Will ran for the AED, and Brendan helped clear bystanders from the ice. The group used the AED to restart the man's heart. Palmer said the man underwent major open-heart surgery and has been recovering, walking more than a mile a day as of last week and able to ride in the front seat of a car again. Committee members praised the students for their leadership and discussed pursuing formal commendations, including for Cam Daly's Marine Corps service.
