Concord Commission Approves Piano Art Installation 4-1 in Historic Districts

Other Committee · Meeting of April 15, 2026

CARLISLE — Concord's Historic Districts Commission approved a 30-day installation of three painted pianos in the historic districts, 4-1, while raising serious size concerns about a proposed Black Heritage Trail marker project. The commission voted in favor of "Pianos on the Town," a Concord Conservatory of Music event tied to the town's 250th anniversary, placing artist-painted upright pianos at the Concord Museum, Middlesex Savings Bank, and a Walden Street alleyway from May 30 through June 26; Commissioner Walter Clay dissented, citing criteria requiring installations not distract from historic settings. The commission separately declined to endorse a draft design for eight to ten Black Heritage Trail markers after multiple commissioners said the proposed five-foot-tall, 18-inch-wide panels on six-foot posts were "as big as a major traffic sign" and would "dominate the landscape," with designer Mimi Graney saying the project remains in an iterative design phase.

At 77 Walden Street, the board unanimously expanded an existing hardship certificate to allow full window replacement after state lead-remediation officials blocked every phased restoration plan the homeowner had attempted. The commission also continued a fence proposal at 50 Monument Street after expressing concern about the "gated community" appearance of five-foot white PVC fences on both sides of a historic farmhouse.
