Concord DEI Commission Votes to Press Historic District on Black Heritage Trail Signs

CARLISLE — May 14, 2026 — Concord DEI Commission votes to send letter urging Historic District Commission to approve Black Heritage Trail signage at intended scale. The commission voted 6-1 at its May 14 meeting to transmit the letter, which argues that HDC feedback questioning the size of interpretive markers and the prominence of images of Black historical figures risks "reproducing the very invisibility the project is meant to address." The 10-site trail through Concord and West Concord faces a June 10 HDC presentation, a June 17 site visit and potential approval vote, and a June 22 Select Board hearing. One commissioner said a preference to wait, but deferred to the majority: "Morally, when I put my head on the pillow, I don't want to know that we've done everything we can." The commission also noted a school district ADL complaint settlement now under DOJ monitoring through June 2027, and reported its community DEI survey has reached 312 responses.
