Carlisle DEI Commission Elects New Chair, Co-Sponsors Iftar Celebration

CARLISLE — April 30, 2026 — Carlisle's DEI Commission elected a new chair and voted to co-sponsor a community Iftar celebration at its April 30 meeting while flagging a tense standoff with the Historic District Commission over Black Heritage Trail signage. Andrea was unanimously elected chair following the transition of founding co-chair Rose, who is completing her final term and will remain on the commission through spring 2027. Members voted unanimously to co-sponsor a community Iftar event proposed by incoming member AJ, who co-hosted a prior event during Ramadan with neighbor Marine Hoda. The commission's community survey stood at 74 responses after a surge tied to Town Meeting outreach — against a prior-cycle benchmark of roughly 700 — with postcards mailing next week and digital advertising beginning May 8. The most urgent matter: the Historic District Commission responded to a sample Black Heritage Trail sign featuring Frederick Douglass with comments members called triggering, including "we've never done anything like this before" and "it's huge," prompting Dr. Williams to ask "how small does black representation have to be in this community before it's acceptable."
